I am interested in human environments and the various effects they have on the people who live within them. These drawings allude to the energy and vibrancy of New York City. Such an environment embodies the dense and rigid space found in no other area of human existence. Living in a city can offer its inhabitants a broader experience in the world of finance, art and culture and in many other spheres. These act as a magnet and give opportunities to the entrepreneur, businessman, banker, theatre-goer and people generally interested in the arts. Among the attractions of living in a city are also the anonymity and freedom it has to offer. These drawings came out of my experience of living as an adult in a busy, confining and claustrophobic city space compared with my early life of living in the countryside and open space.
Ezra Pound said, '"Is New York the most beautiful city in the world?" It is not far from it. No urban nights are like the nights there. I have looked down across the city from high windows. It is then that the great buildings lose reality and take on magical powers. Squares and squares of flame, set and cut into the ether. Here is our poetry, for we have pulled down the stars to our will.'
